Dome vs Gable Patios in Perth - Side by Side Comparison
Dome and gable are the two most common patio roof profiles in Perth. They perform differently and look different, and the right choice depends on your home's style, your site, and how you want the space to feel.

Dome vs gable - the full comparison
| Factor | Dome patio | Gable patio |
|---|---|---|
| Roof profile | Continuous curve from eave to eave | Two pitches meeting at a central ridge |
| Rain run-off | Fast along the arc to perimeter gutters | Divided to two fascia gutters by the central ridge |
| Height at apex | Highest at centre; gradual rise from eaves | Highest at central ridge; sharper rise from eaves |
| Airflow | Good; the curve allows ridge ventilation with no panels | Can be excellent with a louvred or vented ridge cap |
| Visual character | Soft, architectural, works well with rendered homes | Traditional peaked form; suits Federation and brick homes |
| Natural light option | Translucent dome panel at the centre ridge | Louvre or translucent insert at ridge on request |
| Complexity of build | Moderate - the curve requires experienced fabrication | Moderate - ridge connection and two-pitch fit is the key detail |
| Colorbond compatibility | Full range available | Full range available |
| Council permit required | Yes (both attached and freestanding) | Yes (both attached and freestanding) |
| Our recommendation | Modern or rendered homes, pool patios, large entertaining spaces | Traditional brick homes, front verandahs, narrower spans |
A curved roofline does something a flat one never will. But a gable does something a dome can't - it reads as architecture that belongs to a particular era of building.

When to choose a dome
The dome is our primary product because the profile has genuine performance advantages on large entertaining spans.
- You have a modern or rendered home where the curve complements the facade
- The patio is wide - 5m or more - and you want the apex height without a steep pitch
- You want fast, clean rain run-off without a visible central ridge
- You are building a pool patio and want an uninterrupted curve over the entertaining zone
- You want a clerestory light panel at the apex without the complexity of a gable ridge vent
Not sure which profile suits your home?
Bring us a photo of your home's front facade and rear roofline to the site visit. We can assess the existing pitch and profile angles and give you a recommendation based on the geometry of your specific house.

When to choose a gable
The gable has its own strengths, and there are situations where it is clearly the better choice.
- Your home is Federation, Colonial, or a traditional brick style where a gable reads as part of the original design language
- You want a steeper pitch for a particular look or for better drainage on a long narrow span
- The front verandah design guidelines for your suburb specify a gable or peaked profile
- You are building a smaller structure where the cost and complexity difference is marginal

Frequently asked questions
The curved fabrication in a dome does add some material and labour compared to a straight-pitch gable on the same span. We do not quote in general terms - every project is priced specifically. A free quote covers both options if you are undecided.
Yes, though we would generally advise against it for visual consistency. A property with both profiles can look unresolved. If there is a strong reason for each on different structures, we discuss it at the design stage.
No. Both require a building permit and engineer certification in WA. The structural drawings look different but the approval process is the same.
The dome sheds rain efficiently along the continuous curve. A well-built gable also performs well, provided the ridge flashing is correctly detailed. On large spans, the dome's single uninterrupted run to the perimeter gutter is a slight advantage.
Not as a simple conversion - the structural frame and the roof sheet geometry are different for each profile. A conversion would effectively be a full rebuild. It is better to choose the right profile from the start.
The dome's apex sits highest at the centre, so it gives more open headroom mid-span than a gable of the same edge height. A gable concentrates its height at the ridge line. We can model both against your wall and gutter heights at design stage.
It comes down to your roofline. A dome reads as soft and architectural and pairs well with curved or contemporary facades, while a gable echoes a traditional pitched roof. We bring both options to the consult so you can see them against your home.
Yes. Both are built from Australian BlueScope steel and roofed in Colorbond, with the same engineer certification and lifetime workmanship guarantee. The difference is purely the roof geometry, not the quality of materials.
